The Cancer Care Center

Radiation oncology

St. Anthony’s Cancer Care Center has a patient-centered approach to radiation oncology . . . meaning you will receive personalized care.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

IMRT is an advanced type of radiation therapy in which the intensity of the radiation beams can be changed (modulated) during treatment. It is a form of 3-D conformal radiation therapy, meaning the radiation beam is shaped to closely approximate the shape of the tumor. This precision helps the IMRT spare the surround healthy tissue from overexposure to radiation, and allows the doctors to deliver a higher dose of radiation to the tumor itself.

During IMRT, the beam shape is actually changing hundreds of times, in order to target only the tumor. Radiation therapy is usually given in daily sessions over the course of a few weeks, with a break of a few weeks in between to recuperate

What can I expect during IMRT?

  1. The treatment has to be carefully planned. Your doctors will use sophisticated imaging scans, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) to obtain the most accurate 3-D picture of the tumor.
  2. You will need to be lie very still during the treatment. Because it is crucial that the radiation beam hits the precise spot at every treatment, you may be immobilized with a head or body mold to keep you still.
  3. The radiation will be delivered, and your health care team will monitor you constantly to make sure the beams are targeting the correct area.
