Volunteers

Volunteer Willie-Hall Ferry easily has accumulated more than 12,000 volunteer hours. How many, exactly? She has no idea. “That’s not what we work for,” she notes with a smile.
Willie-Hall Ferry
Whether as members of the Auxiliary or with the Volunteer Services department, some of the most dedicated volunteers in St. Louis consider St. Anthony’s their second home. One of these is Willie-Hall Ferry, 91, of unincorporated south St. Louis County.
Ferry, who just started her 34th year as a volunteer, has worked for 10 years in the cardiac waiting room, helping patients and their families who are waiting for radiology screenings and cardiac catheterizations.
“We do whatever we can do to help—it might be a glass of water, sometimes they just needed someone to talk to,” said Ferry, who has accumulated more than 12,000 volunteer hours, easily. How many hours exactly? She has no idea. “That’s not what we work for,” she notes with a smile.
Cardiac bypass surgery slowed her pace briefly in 1989, but she has no plans to retire at this time.
“I’m sure not going to sit and watch television,” Ferry said.
