Gallbladder surgery recovery and health were fast
At my age, I try to be as active as I can. I’m a golfer and boater, and I bicycle.
One morning in late May, I awakened with pain that resembled a severe stomachache. I started to take my bike to Grant’s Trail, but the pain intensified. I took a shower and tried to relax, but it wasn’t helping. On the way to the doctor’s office, I stopped at a local fire department, because I didn’t know if the pain was cardiac-related or what. I was transported to St. Anthony’s Emergency Department, where the doctors said I was in the process of passing a gallstone.
I was a firefighter for 33 years, and it kind of rattled me a little bit. I had never experienced a pain like that in that part of my body.
I was referred to surgeon Bradley Ross, D.O., of St. Louis Surgical Services. He gave me the options and made it very simple. I opted to undergo single-incision, robotic-assisted cholecystectomy or gallbladder removal surgery. I was very pleased with Dr. Ross. There wasn’t much to the surgery, to be honest: I had a little discomfort in the abdomen, but it wasn’t as uncomfortable as I thought it would be. Recovery time and the healing process were fast, and I was able to resume normal activities soon after surgery.
The staff treated me very well, and I was pleased with their care. My post-surgical nurse also was a golfer, so that made it much easier. I had a knee replacement earlier in the year, so this was the most contact I’ve had with hospitals my entire life. I just hope that’s the extent of it for this year!
