Hyperbaric Center impressed me as a parent.

My son, Zach, is an amazing young man with a zest for life. He’s an honor roll student, plays basketball and baseball, and has just learned he’s been accepted as a freshman at St. Louis University High School next fall. He’s also a fighter, having emerged victorious over a hard-fought battle with cancer, and he serves as a volunteer ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network.

When Zach was four years old, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancerous tumor of the soft tissue. After intense chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and a bone marrow transplant, the cancer finally went into remission. The cancer returned in 2007 and Zach’s treatment included chemotherapy, surgery and radiation again. Then in 2008 the doctors discovered he had thyroid cancer, a secondary cancer caused from treatments. They removed his thyroid and he received radiated iodine treatment.

During his first bout with cancer, Zach underwent radiation therapy that caused one of his teeth to lose its blood supply and decay. He needed hyperbaric oxygen therapy before the tooth could be removed. After some research, I selected St. Anthony’s because its caregivers bent over backward to accommodate Zach’s school schedule and my work schedule. They were fantastic and treated us like family, particularly Robert Schaumburg, our certified hyperbaric technician.

The tissue around the tooth was necrotic when Zach began treatment. Today, after 30 treatments, the tissue is healthy, and I’ve observed a marked difference in Zach’s health and growth. St. Anthony’s Hyperbaric Center provided the treatment he needed and the care he deserved. The doctors were great, and the care we received really impressed me as a parent.
