Bosnian Translation at Lemay
Vildana Halilovic, an urgent care tech, provides care and translation services for Bosnians, such as Fatima Mujic.
Fatima Mujic, 44, is talking with Vildana Halilovic, a certified urgent care tech in the Lemay Urgent Care Center. With St. Louis home to one of the largest Bosnian refugee populations in the United States, Vildana’s ability to not only help take care of patients, but also to serve as a translator, makes her a critical member of the
“We usually see a dozen or more Bosnians every day who can’t speak English,” says Halilovic. “If I’m not here, we arrange for a translator from the International Institute of St. Louis to help our patients.” The Lemay center sees thousands of patients annually from Oakville to St. Louis Hills.
Mujic, who fled the war in Bosnia six years ago, settled in St. Louis because her mother and brother already had immigrated here. She says many Bosnians know about Vildana, as well as fellow Bosnian Emir Keric, MD, a primary care physician whose office is in the same building as the Lemay Urgent Care Center. “She came here earlier this year with stomach pains,” says Halilovic, who is engaged to Mujic’s son. “She was glad I could help explain things.”
