Spiritual (pastoral) care services

Prayer requests

The pastoral care department welcomes prayer requests for your loved ones. Click to send your request.

As a Catholic facility, St. Anthony's Medical Center supports the spiritual and physical needs of our patients and staff.  We know being in a hospital with an illness or injury can be stressful for the patient and their family.  We also know that the spiritual care of the patient is an important and integral part of the healing process. Our chaplains are available any time to offer spiritual support by calling 314-525-1999.  You also can notify the pastoral care team to pray for your loved ones any time using our online "prayer request" form.

Chaplains

Our chaplains are specifically trained to meet the religious and spiritual needs of all patients – no matter the denomination or spiritual affiliation. Because each person’s needs are different, we provide a variety of individualized services. The chaplains are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to:

  • actively listen to any concerns you or your family may have
  • administer rites and sacraments
  • help in time of crisis and offer expertise in trauma response, dementia support, end-of-life decisions, grief support, mental health issues and staff support
  • discuss ethical concerns
  • discuss issues such as loss, death, grief, divorce or lifestyle changes
  • offer information about organ and tissue donation
  • offer prayers: morning PA prayers (Monday-Friday), evening PA prayers (daily), quarterly memorial services and other opportunities of prayer

Chapel services

St. Anthony's chapel, located on the main level, is open 24 hours a day for prayer and meditation. In addition:

  • A prayer service, open to all patients, family members and visitors, is offered each weekday morning at 8 a.m.
  • Catholic Masses are celebrated in the chapel at 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
  • Ecumenical worship services are provided upon request.
  • Masses and special prayer services are offered on religious and some secular holidays.
  • Masses and religious services are televised on channel 73.

Sacraments

Holy Communion is distributed daily to our Catholic patients by volunteer commissioned extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist from neighboring parishes. The Sacraments of Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation are available upon request. In addition, the pastoral care staff will attempt to provide the sacramental needs of non-Catholic patients by contacting their pastor or minister as requested.

Jumu’ah prayer

Space is available for our Muslim staff and patients to pray Jumu’ah from 1:15 to 2 p.m. on Fridays in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit’s small consultation room. Signs will be posted on the door.
