St. Anthony’s Medical Center has overhauled the way we care for patients when they arrive in the Emergency Department. Our biggest goal was to reduce the amount of time patients had to wait...and we did!
Reduced wait time
We’ve dramatically decreased the time it takes for a patient to see a doctor. In November 2013, we averaged 24 minutes, which is five times faster than one year ago.
How we did it
- The Emergency Department has physically changed. It now has six flexible triage rooms and an EMS and Patient Flow Communications Center. The new areas allow ED staff and doctors to assess quickly each patients’ needs, provide immediate medical treatment and discharge or move patients to appropriate care areas.
- We’ve established required qualifications for triage RNs to follow and developed a Quick Triage process to improve patient flow.
- Patients with non-life threatening conditions are Fast Tracked. This is a physically unique four-room space where emergency patients are seen by nurses and a physician assistant dedicated solely to speed their care.
- We also are focusing on patient flow for admitted ED patients. Our goal is to never have a bed sitting empty while patients are in waiting room.
