Scholarship Programs

Educational Boost for Employees

Gray family: Scholarships

Andrea Gray remembers the day in 2006 as though it was yesterday.

An administrative assistant in Infection Prevention and Control, Gray was attending an employee forum when she learned about a new scholarship program for sons and daughters of employees.

Andrea and her husband, Michael, have three sons. Their oldest, Ryan, was a junior at UMSL the first year the scholarships were offered. All three have taken advantage of the scholarship program, one of the largest of its kind in the community and one of the best funded by an employer in the St. Louis area.

“I couldn't believe what I was hearing and the pivotal timing,” Gray said. “Words cannot express the pride my husband and I have in our boys and their college accomplishments, nor can words express our gratitude to St. Anthony’s for the financial assistance.”

St. Anthony’s Medical Center Foundation established the innovative scholarship programs at the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation as a way to invest in the future of the sons and daughters of medical center employees through education. From 2006 to 2011, 171 students have earned more than $2,350,000 in scholarship support from the programs.

While St. Anthony’s provides the funding for the scholarships, the medical center has no control over the programs or the selection process. The scholarships are programs of the not-for-profit Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation, which accepts and reviews all applications and selects the recipients impartially.

“The people of St. Anthony’s Medical Center’s Foundation who set this up are among the most generous and exuberant about the future of any donors I've met,” said Amy Basore Murphy, director of Scholarships and Donor Services for the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation.”They clearly want to make these scholarships meaningful to the families.”

“I've been an employee for 29 years, and have always said St. Anthony’s is a fantastic place to work,” Andrea Gray said. “The Sons and Daughters scholarship program is just the icing on the cake.”

Carol Ellis, Director, Nursing Resources/Professional Practice, said she knows of no similar program in the St. Louis area.

“What we offer is very specific to the sons and daughters of our employees,” she said. “I don’t know of any other hospital that offers that. It’s a great opportunity for the children of our employees.”
