2015 scholarship recipients
This fall, 15 students will head to college with the support of $114,000 in scholarships, newly awarded by St. Anthony’s Medical Center Foundation in partnership with the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation.
St. Anthony’s Norbert Siegfried Scholarships for Sons and Daughters of Employees were awarded to 11 children of St. Anthony’s employees who are academically qualified, wrote strong essays, received recommendations, and demonstrate financial need. The scholarship program is named in honor of Norbert Siegfried, one of the founding fathers of St. Anthony’s Medical Center’s board of directors and a former longtime board chairman. St. Anthony’s Medical Center Foundation Academic Excellence Scholarships were awarded to four children of St. Anthony’s employees who earned exemplary academic records and demonstrate the St. Anthony’s values of excellence through teamwork and mutual respect, as well as compassion and respect for all persons. Students in both scholarship programs will receive support to pursue an undergraduate degree in any field of study.
“Our partnership with St. Anthony’s is not a new thing; we support more than 500 charitable funds totaling $320 million in assets and distribute more than $20 million in grants annually,” Amy Basore Murphy, Director of Scholarships & Donor Services for the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation, told the students at an awards reception June 25. “And I have to tell you St. Anthony’s is the most generous employer in the region. And you all are a part of this.”
The St. Anthony’s scholarship programs have now awarded more than $4.1 million to 243 students since the program began in 2006.
“National statistics indicate that only 30 percent of those who start college will finish,” Murphy said. “In this program it’s been over 80 percent, so you’re starting your path with great distinction behind you.”
Norbert Siegfried, who founded the scholarship program, urged the students to work hard on a career path suited to their interests and talents.
“If you take advantage of your youth, you’re going to really get a jump start,” Siegfried said. “One of the keys to success is to be positive. People like to be around positive, happy people.”
