Faster Lab Test, Better Quality
St. Anthony’s Medical Center earned the Missouri Team Quality Award (MTQA) for dramatically reducing the time from when a physician orders a test to when the results are sent back.
The shortened time frame is important because St. Anthony’s lab performs more than one million tests annually and test results help physicians determine patient treatment plans.
To speed results, the lab staff:
- Created a central processing area, which eliminated inefficiencies caused by receiving specimens from multiple locations.
- Created standardized phlebotomy (blood drawing) carts to reduce restocking time.
- Established set times to gather specimens within the hospital.
Results:
A 45-minute drop in the average time to collect specimens and a 24 percent decrease in the time between the ordering of a test and the delivery of results.
