Tips for choosing a physician
Choosing the right physician for you and your family is one of the most important health care decisions you'll make.
- Expertise — Quality often is measured by a physician’s training, years in practice, number of procedures or positive outcomes. Board-certification means a physician has demonstrated additional knowledge and expertise in a specialty.
- Communication style — Does your physician listen carefully, use easy-to-understand language, and is willing to explain tests, procedures, and length of time for results? This will influence your comfort level and ability to participate with your physician as a partner.
- Professionalism and service — Comfort, cleanliness and convenience as well as the courteous and professional attitudes of the staff are an extension of the care you receive from your doctor.
- Accessibility — Is your insurance plan accepted? Is there a long wait time for appointments? Does your physician typically refer to the hospital of your choice? Where will you go for laboratory testing or X-rays?
