Cancer Care Center Creates New Patient Handbooks

St. Anthony’s Medical Center’s Cancer Care Center has designed a new Patient Handbook to help patients receiving radiation therapy.
The handbook was introduced in May to help cancer patients and their families organize information about appointments, instructions, treatments, medications and dietary considerations, enabling them to keep all pertinent information in one easily accessible place.
“Business people wouldn’t dream of trying to keep their lives organized without some kind of planner,” said Sandy Evans, manager of Radiation Oncology. “The medical professionals at St. Anthony’s Cancer Care Center believe that people who are battling cancer also deserve order and organization in their lives, along with some help navigating health care waters that can be fraught with confusing paperwork, appointments times, treatment instructions, etc.”
The handbook contains general hospital information, including campus maps and parking options, as well as information about St. Anthony’s cancer clinical trials. It offers comprehensive explanations of radiation therapy, including step-by-step descriptions of what the patient can expect.
To help patients become more familiar with the names and faces of the staff, one section is devoted to photos, credentials and brief bios of the Cancer Care Center staff. There also are calendars to record dates of treatments and appointments and forms that allow patients to record tests, their dates and results. The contacts and resources section lists cancer support resources, both at St. Anthony’s and in the community, along with contact information.
The last section of the book provides blank journal pages, so patients can record notes and personal thoughts.
“It seems like a small thing; but when you receive a cancer diagnosis, small things can make a big difference,” Evans said. “At St. Anthony’s Cancer Care Center, we live our mission to provide the best care to every patient every day.”
