St. Anthony's Receives Construction Industry Best Practices Award for Heart Pavilion and Pediatric Emergency Department

St. Anthony’s Medical Center’s new Heart and Surgical Pavilion and Cardinal Glennon Pediatric Emergency Care at St. Anthony’s Medical Center recently were honored with a Construction Industry Best Practices Award.

The award, by the St. Louis Council of Construction Consumers, recognizes processes and methods that lead to enhanced project performance and safety.  St. Anthony’s is one of five area projects, and the only area health care organization, to receive this honor.  The award was presented during a ceremony Dec. 18 at the Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet.

“The facility design was the cooperative effort of many parties, especially the clinicians, all of whom were focused on providing better patient care,” said John McGuire, executive vice president – corporate finance at St. Anthony’s.

The St. Louis Council of Construction Consumers is an organization that provides leadership to improve value, quality and safety in the delivery of facilities and maintenance by the St. Louis design and construction industry.

In 2006, Cannon Design received an Excellence in Design award from the St. Louis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Construction Products Council for the design of the yet-to-be-built Heart and Surgical Pavilion.

The latest honors recognize the project for the front end (pre-project) planning best practice, said Terry Simpson, senior project manager for Northstar Management Co., which oversaw details of the project and worked with the other principals – St. Anthony’s administrators, Cannon Design and McCarthy Construction.

“This award provides special recognition to the St. Anthony’s project team for their accomplishments through the use of best practices,” Simpson said.

The $5 million Cardinal Glennon Pediatric Emergency Care at St. Anthony’s and the $50.5 million Heart and Surgical Pavilion were completed on schedule and on budget in December 2007 and the summer of 2008, respectively.  All construction activities were completed with zero lost-time accidents.
