Acute Rehab Earns CARF Accreditation Again
See what CARF said about St. Anthony's
For the second time in a row, St. Anthony’s Acute Rehab department has applied for – and received – a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an international, not-for-profit organization that accredits human services providers based on quality of services.
Only 13 other inpatient rehabilitation programs have earned the CARF accreditation in Missouri. The process is an extensive and arduous one, with a book-long array of more than 200 compliance measures required to meet CARF standards. Based on the surveyors’ review, providers may be awarded CARF accreditation for one or three years.
“We are truly gratified to receive this external recognition of our Acute Rehab program and particularly the high caliber of our multi-disciplinary team,” said Michalene Maringer, Chief Hospital Officer for St. Anthony’s. “The surveyors noted not only the clinical expertise of the team, but also the personal commitment of each member to quality patient outcomes and to each other. By providing the best care to every patient, every day, St. Anthony’s Acute Rehab team understands the difference they make in each patient’s life.”
Weekly team conferences on patients, quality standards, business standards, safety standards, information standards, health standards and more are required, along with rigorous auditing and documentation.
Before it is accredited by CARF, a provider must show that it focuses on quality improvement, the best possible outcomes of its services and customer satisfaction. The CARF Survey Report cited St. Anthony’s for excellence in the following areas:
- Well-trained, loyal staff with extensive expertise and experience in patient treatment
- high caliber of communication between team members
- warm and caring setting for rehabilitation, with large, comfortable rooms
- ongoing support provided for continuing education of staff members
- outstanding medical staff support: physicians consistently available, approachable and responsive to staff
- leadership empowers employees to participate in decision-making, makes performance improvement a priority
- noteworthy new In Stride program for amputees created with input from patients
- strong focus on patient education, re-integration into the community and transitional opportunities
- commendable use of volunteer mentors to help provide support to persons served.
Additionally, the report on St. Anthony’s Acute Rehab read, “Information is shared and decisions are made keeping in mind the best interests of the persons served. The organization is fiscally sound, and careful planning is seen in all areas for the future. The staff is enthusiastic and happy to be a part of such a dynamic program.”
