Spirit of St. Anthony Award winners to be honored

This year, three recipients will receive with the Spirit of St. Anthony Award in honor of their outstanding philanthropic and humanitarian work in the community. The Physician Ambassadors of St. Anthony’s Charitable Foundation will honor Edward L. Burns, M.D., the creator of St. Anthony’s hospice program and its Medical Director of Palliative Medicine; Katherine Dunivin, a 38-year volunteer who has devoted more than 23,700 hours of her life to St. Anthony’s; and Hazelwood & Weber, LLC, a law firm that served as a key partner in establishing St. Anthony’s Cancer Care Fund. The awards celebration will be part of the Physician Ambassadors annual fundraising dinner on September 5.

“These awardees represent the very essence of what is great about St. Anthony’s,” said Joseph Forand, M.D., chairman of St. Anthony’s Charitable Foundation’s Physician Ambassadors. “The partnership of Hazelwood and Weber, the spirit of Katherine Dunivin and the innovative care by Dr. Ed Burns should be an inspiration to our staff and are an ongoing blessing to our patients.”

Edward L. Burns, M.D.

Edward L. Burns, MD

As a certified physician specializing in Internal, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Dr. Burns has created one of the finest hospice programs in the country. The Fern & Russell F. De Greeff Hospice House, which is the model of end-of-life care and the only hospice house of its kind in the area, came to life 15 years ago at St. Anthony’s under Dr. Burns’ medical direction and fundraising efforts.

He serves as the Medical Director of Palliative Medicine and Home Care, and is an emeritus member of the Medical Executive Committee. He also is distinguished by St. Anthony’s as Senior Clinical Ethicist and is the Chair of St. Anthony’s Ethics Committee.

Dr. Burns is a founding member of St. Anthony’s Charitable Foundation Board, the Physician Ambassadors, and the Hospice Development Committee, which led the implementation of the annual golf tournament to benefit hospice. Each year since 2007, Dr. Burns has been named as one of the Best Doctors in America, a prestigious peer acknowledgment that places him in the top 5 percent of physicians in the United States.

Katherine Dunivin

Katherine Dunivin

“St. Anthony’s is my community hospital, and I want to help my community,” said Katherine “Kate” Dunivin of her more than 23,700 hours of service to St. Anthony’s over 38 years. Kate, mother of four and grandmother of seven, began helping to separate mail in 1976. Since then, she has worked with the switchboard and spent several years as the buyer of baby items for the gift shop, traveling to Chicago twice a year on buying trips.

Most recently, she has volunteered twice a week in the gift shop storage room, and works tirelessly to ensure that every piece of merchandise that makes its way into the gift shop is unpacked, cataloged appropriately and priced.

“I enjoy doing it, because it’s something that has to be done,” said Kate.

Kate sometimes slips in and out without being seen by many people, but she is dedicated to her work. When her doctor told her last year that her health issues would require that she stop driving for a year, she convinced her daughter to drive her to St. Anthony’s.

Kate also serves as a lifetime member of St. Anthony’s Auxiliary. Last year, the Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts resulted in a $300,000 contribution to the medical center, much of it coming from gift shop revenues.
