Project Overview
In a major re-investment for the south St. Louis County region, St. Anthony's Medical Center is undergoing a $90 million hospital re-design. The construction project, which will result in a new, four-story hospital facility, a separate pediatric emergency department, and all private acute care patient rooms, is expected to be complete by mid-2008. See below for information to assist you while construction is in progress and click for a campus map showing construction changes.
Traffic Flow
Entrance to the campus via Kennerly Road will remain unchanged. Vehicles entering or leaving the hospital campus via Schuessler Road will use a new roadway constructed near the front of Anthony House. The former access roads and parking lot closest to the Outpatient (south) side of the hospital are now within the project construction site. Signs are posted throughout the Medical Center campus to clearly and safely direct patients, visitors and employees to their destinations.
Medical Center Entrances and Parking
While the Medical Center's Main Entrance will remain unchanged, the former Outpatient Entrance is closed. During the construction period, patients and visitors may use the drop-off entrances to the Cancer Center and the Outpatient drop-off area. Because parking behind Outpatient Registration is also closed due to construction, free valet parking service has been expanded for the convenience of patients and visitors. Free valet parking will be available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the front entrance, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Medical Office Building entrance, and from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Outpatient drop-off area. Valet services will be arranged for patients discharged from Outpatient Surgery after 5 p.m. Additionally, shuttles will continue to transport patients and visitors to and from their cars. Volunteers will provide wayfinding and escort services at the Outpatient drop-off area.
Project Update
The campus expansion and renovation projects are moving full steam ahead.
- The south addition is on schedule for completion by May 30, with the finishing touches now under way.
- Completion of the exterior glass curtain wall system, windows and metal panels is scheduled for mid-March. Workers are testing these systems on an ongoing basis to confirm the materials have been installed correctly, and that the building is watertight.
- Wall finishes, ceiling gridwork and cabinetry are nearing completion on the second, third and fourth floors, and flooring is being installed in the third—and fourth—floor patient rooms and utility rooms. Corridor flooring is scheduled to be installed in March.
- Sliding doors are being installed in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), and wall finishes and ceiling grids there are complete. The operating room surgery lights and medical gas booms are being installed, with flooring to be installed in March.
- Selections for major furniture and furnishings are complete and orders released. Final selections are now being made for minor furnishings. The equipment planner, Mitchell, was on campus last week to finish the equipment selections for the south addition.
- Planning is under way to coordinate the installation of telephone, data and other services, and to move the service lines from the existing hospital into the south addition.
- Building tie-ins are located at each floor level between the south addition and existing hospital, and between the south addition and the Heart Center. Construction is nearing completion in the Heart Center first-floor rehab area, and construction is ongoing for the tie-ins on first-floor Same Day Surgery, second floor SICU, third-floor Cardiac Care Unit, and fourth-floor Rehab.
- At the Central Utility Plant, the two new generators are being tested and will be placed online in March. Other work within the plant is nearing completion.
- With the new monuments and signs and plantings in place, the Campus Identity Plan project is nearly complete. The final touch, grass seed, will be planted this spring.
Future Phases
Still to come are the second, third and fourth phases of the project, scheduled for completion by March 2010:
- The second phase is scheduled to begin the third week of June and will take approximately 12 months to complete. It includes renovations of the existing third-floor patient rooms and renovations within the existing Surgery department for eight new operating rooms, three new cath labs, and two new Electrophysiology rooms.
- The third phase of the project renovates space within the existing Surgery department for six new operating rooms and three new Interventional Radiology rooms.
- The fourth and final phase renovates the existing cath lab area for the new Interventional Radiology Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
Construction Fun Facts:
- As part of the construction process, nice mock-up rooms were constructed in the Heart Center. These rooms were created to verify room size, location of electrical outlets, medical gas outlets, phone and data outlets, overhead lighting location and furniture layout. This approach allows for design adjustment prior to construction of the rooms.
- One of the highlights of this project will be the utilization of a tower crane to be used to hoist materials to construct the south building addition. This tower crane is quite large -- approximately 120 ft. tall with a swing radius of 230 ft. for a total reach of nearly the length of 1 ½ football fields.
- 108 drilled piers will be installed to support the new south addition.
- 300 tons of reinforcing steel will be placed in the building foundations.
- 3,500 cubic yards of concrete will be poured for the building foundations.
