Acute Rehabilitation Unit

Acute Rehabilitation Unit

St. Anthony's Medical Center offers premier inpatient rehabilitation services in a dedicated 49-bed Acute Rehabilitation Unit that is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). CARF evaluates programs for multidisciplinary, comprehensive rehabilitative care and excellent outcomes. Since 2005, the Acute Rehabilitation Unit has been awarded “exemplary status” by CARF for its innovative rehabilitation services.

Our Acute Rehabilitation Unit has board-certified rehabilitation specialists and is designed to assist patients who have recovered from the acute phase of an illness or injury but still need 24-hour physician management and nursing care in addition to rehabilitation services.

Patients who may benefit from acute rehabilitation services include those who have had a:

  • Stroke and other neurological impairments
  • Complex fracture
  • Multi-injury accident
  • Amputation
  • Head injury
  • Spinal Cord Injury

Patients with other disabling injuries or illnesses will be evaluated for admission to the inpatient rehabilitation unit to determine if the patient meets rehab admission criteria. The rehab unit also accepts bariatric patients or patients that require telemetry on a case-by-case basis. We accept patients who require peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. We are unable to accept patients under 18 years of age.

Why Inpatient Rehabilitation?

Research has shown that inpatient rehabilitative care can result in better patient outcomes than if a patient was discharged or transferred direct to a skilled nursing facility. Benefits of inpatient acute rehabilitation include:

  • Immediate access to emergency care if needed
  • More hours (15 hours a week) dedicated to comprehensive rehabilitation therapy than a traditional skilled nursing facility or sub-acute rehabilitation unit
  • No transfer to an outside facility for hospital diagnostic or ancillary services (which occurs in other rehabilitation settings)
  • 24/7 physician medical coverage and rehabilitation RN nursing care
  • 24-hour pharmacy services
  • Specialized onsite services, such as skin and wound treatment as well as orthotic and prosthetic services

Referrals or inquiries from other hospitals, facilities or families are always welcome. We make it easy with a direct line to our Acute Rehabilitation Team:

CARF Accreditation

CARF accreditation seal

For the fourth time in a row, St. Anthony’s Medical Center’s acute rehabilitation department has received a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). This international, not-for-profit organization accredits human services providers, based on quality of services. The process is an extensive and arduous one, with a book-long array of more than 200 compliance measures required to meet CARF standards. Before it is accredited by CARF, a provider must show that it focuses on continuous quality improvement, driven by input from all stakeholders, to achieve the best possible outcomes and customer satisfaction.
