Vestibular Rehabilitation

Patient uses walker

The Vestibular Rehabilitation Program at St. Anthony’s Medical Center provides effective and compassionate treatment for people dealing with dizziness and balance disorders caused by the inner ear, the nerve to the ear, the brain or the sensory systems that regulate balance.

Symptoms

  • Dizziness/lightheadedness
  • Falling, difficulty walking straight
  • The sensation of motion even when not moving
  • Increased or temporary dizziness associated with head motion
  • Nausea particularly with change in positions
  • Double/blurred vision

Treatment

Specially trained therapists at the Vestibular Program perform an in-depth evaluation in order to design a treatment program to reduce each patient's individual symptoms. Since vestibular/balance problems may interfere with basic functions and the ability to enjoy life, the patient's goals are at the forefront of therapy.

Treatment may include any of the following:

  • Eye strengthening exercises
  • Positional exercises for the inner ear
  • Balance and gait training
  • Coping strategies

All patients are educated on the purpose and importance of each exercise. Patients are given a home program that should be followed as prescribed by the therapist.

Getting Started

To participate in vestibular rehabilitation, you need a prescription from your physician. If you do not have a primary care physician or specialist, we can help refer you to one who is familiar with this condition.
