Atrial fibrillation treatment
St. Anthony's Medical Center leads the way with a safe, effective procedure for atrial fibrillation called radiofrequency ablation..
Atrial fibrillation is an erratic rhythm that comes from the top chambers of the heart. It causes the heart to beat irregularly, and often very fast. It is the most common heart rhythm problem. Patients with AFib are typically put on blood thinners to reduce their risk of stroke. But AFib can be treated and potentially cured with a catheter procedure called an ablation, which uses radiofrequency energy to destroy areas of tissue that cause AFib.
Radiofrequency ablation is a non-surgical procedure that targets heart tissue that triggers the erratic rhythm by snaking catheters through the blood vessels from the groin into the heart to deliver radiofrequency energy, thereby destroying the tissue causing the arrhythmia.
St. Anthony's Medical Center features an electrophysiology lab which was specifically designed to perform complex ablation procedures. Physicians use a 3-D color heart mapping system with GPS technology to visualize each patient's heart, and guide catheters to the right location. St. Anthony's was the first in the region to acquire this technology, which makes the procedure faster and much safer for patients and gives better long-term results.
