Breast Cancer Risks

The risk of developing breast cancer is different for each woman, depending on lifestyle and personal traits known as risk factors.

The following risk factors are strongly related to the disease:

  • Family history - mother, sister(s) or daughter(s) who have had breast cancer
  • Advanced age - the older a woman is the greater her risk
  • Never having borne a child
  • Having a first child after age 30
  • Early first menstrual period
  • History of benigh breast disease that required biopsies
  • Certain other pre-existing breast conditions

Recommendations:

AGE 20-30:

Women have a clinical breast exam at least every three years and perform a breast self-exam once a month.

AGE 40+:
