Kirkwood Board of Education member Ruth Jayne, her husband Dave, and their children, Emmie and Callie, appreciate the close proximity and convenience of the new Big Bend Urgent Care Center.

“I’m all for accessibility, convenience and excellent healthcare, especially right near our neighborhood.” Three-term Kirkwood Board of Education member Ruth Jayne says the new Big Bend Urgent Care Center opened by St. Anthony’s last month is a great complement to her wonderful, close-knit community.

The Center, located at 10296 Big Bend Blvd. (in front of Sam’s Club), offers a wide variety of walk-in healthcare services and aims to help those needing medical care from Crestwood, Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Affton, Sunset Hills and surrounding communities.

The Big Bend Urgent Care Center is the fourth community based urgent care center for St. Anthony’s. “We’ve experienced a 300 percent growth in demand for urgent care services over the past five years in the Arnold, Fenton and Lemay Ferry locations,” says Michael Anderson, director of St. Anthony’s urgent care centers. “Our new Big Bend Center fills a vital niche for healthcare services, especially since St. Joseph Hospital is closing in Kirkwood.”

“We are excited to be working with St. Anthony’s to bring urgent care services to our community,” says Crestwood Mayor Roy Robinson. “Due to its location, the urgent care center will be used by residents of not only Crestwood but also the surrounding communities.”

Geri Tyrey, a Kirkwood resident as well as a therapeutic recreation specialist at St. Anthony’s, agrees. Tyrey, her husband Mike, and their two children, Adrienne, 19, and Natalie, 15, all have used the Fenton Urgent Care over the past several years. “We’ve been to Fenton for various illnesses and even to have them treat my daughter’s broken finger,” says Tyrey. “I think it’s great that we now have an urgent care center close by.”

Urgent care centers are convenient, fast and accessible. With extended walk-in hours seven days a week, the centers provide services when physician offices are typically closed and at a cost below that of going to a hospital emergency room. At the Big Bend UCC, care is available from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. every day.

A key point that sets urgent care centers apart from the rapid rise of health clinics in retail stores is that the centers are staffed with board-certified physicians.

“We have digital X-ray services onsite and can treat anything from an ear infection or simple fracture to more serious medical concerns,” says Donn Richards, MD, UCC Medical Director. “We also can fill medical prescriptions before patients leave so that they don’t have to worry about finding a 24-hour pharmacy.”
