A Calm Setting for Healing

Walking through St. Anthony’s Heart and Surgical Pavilion, Creve Coeur resident Tracy Milton says the patient-focused design of St. Anthony’s new four-story surgical tower helped to ease her stress while waiting for her husband to undergo a procedure to treat colon cancer.
“Before, we had to wait in a general area with curtains around the beds or in a group waiting area and you could hear conversations all around you,” she says. “When we came back this time, we were in our own room in Same Day Surgery. It was calmness versus chaos, and it was wonderful.”
Her husband, Steve, agrees. Diagnosed at age 44 with a large, cancerous tumor in his upper colon, Milton says the diagnosis alone was overwhelming. “There was no history of cancer in my family. The symptoms I had were stomach cramps and fatigue — no bleeding — so we first thought it was anemia or diverticulitis. An ultrasound found nothing, but a colonoscopy found the tumor. We went from diagnosis to surgery in just one week.”
Now undergoing chemotherapy after having a portion of his colon removed, Milton says the great doctors, private rooms and quiet surroundings helped him focus on what’s important. “You need to have those times to clear your head and think,” he says. “We had privacy and it wasn’t noisy or distracting. It was great that my wife could stay in the same room all day while I was in surgery.”
The Pavilion contains state-of-the-art operating rooms, an innovative Surgical Intensive Care Unit and a Same Day Surgery unit. With a secluded Healing Garden in its center, the Pavilion is ideally designed to infuse a sense of peace so that patients and families can heal.
“It definitely reflects that,” says Tracy Milton. “I’ve had to sit here for many hours and it’s not chaotic. Yes, I think it’s a calm,healing place.”
