Ashley Lane Keeps on Growing!

Today, Ashley can still rollerblade, thanks to her successful surgery.
Twelve-year-old Ashley Lane is happily rollerblading down her neighborhood street in Essex, Mo. The sixth-grader keeps an active schedule after being treated for two broken bones in her left forearm at both St. Anthony’s Medical Center and Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.
“We had a fort in our backyard and there was a hole in the back of it,” says Ashley. “I was playing with my friends and I lost my balance and BOOM! I fell on my arm.”

Ashley broke both her radius and ulna bone above the wrist. After rushing to local hospitals, she was referred to Cardinal Glennon pediatric orthopedist at St. Anthony's.
“She had such a terrible break that the doctors near our home were unable to set it properly. They put her arm in a cast and we drove three hours to St. Anthony’s,” says Ashley’s mom, Diane. “I liked the idea of seeing a pediatric orthopedist because I thought she’d know more about how to treat kids.”
Eighteen pediatric specialists from Cardinal Glennon have patient offices in St. Anthony’s Medical Center’s Medical Plaza. The two hospitals have collaborated to offer highly skilled pediatric care at St. Anthony’s since 2003. So far, 13 outpatient pediatric specialties are on campus.
By having these clinics at St. Anthony’s, patients can receive the expertise they expect from a premier, academic pediatric hospital but closer to their homes.
“It’s so much easier to come to St. Anthony’s without driving all the way into the city,” says Diane Lane. “We never had to wait very long for doctor’s appointments, and we’re very happy that we had a Cardinal Glennon doctor here to take care of Ashley.”
Ashley first underwent surgery at Cardinal Glennon where titanium rods were inserted into each bone. The intramedullary rods are used to align and stabilize the bones. The rods were inserted in the center of Ashley’s bone marrow canal and they remained there until the bones healed and became stronger.
In September 2007, a year after her fall, Ashley came back to St. Anthony’s for outpatient surgery to remove the rods. “While I had the rods in, I couldn't rollerblade or ride my bike or anything like that,” she says. “I couldn't even take P.E. at school for a while. But now, I can do anything.”
“Well, she’s not back in the backyard fort,” laughs her mom. “But she is back to being an active kid and that’s great!”
