Getting a Referral

The Sleep Disorder Center accepts patients referred by a physician as well as self-referred patients.

The Evaluation

The Sleep Disorder Center staff evaluates the patient’s sleep habits and health history. The Sleep Disorder Center physician working with the Sleep Disorder Center staff may recommend a “sleep study” called a polysomnogram, which is an overnight test to monitor sleep patterns, breathing and other functions. These overnight tests are performed in the Sleep Disorder Center’s private, home-like rooms located in the Hyland Education & Training Center at St. Anthony’s Medical Center.

Treatment Options

Depending on the diagnosis, treatments can vary widely. The most common include Nasal CPAP (a device that improves breathing during sleep), surgery, weight loss, change of sleeping position, dental appliances and medication.

About Obstructive Sleep Apnea

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is when a person stops breathing during sleep because his or her airway collapses and prevents air from getting into the lungs. OSA is the most common sleep problem in the United States, affecting nearly 10 percent of the population.

What happens if OSA is not treated?

If left untreated, OSA is known to cause:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Symptoms of depression
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
