Diabetes Education
The nationally certified Diabetes Education Program at St. Anthony’s Medical Center provides valuable information, individual training, support groups and refresher courses to help you stay healthy and self-manage your diabetes.
Individual Training
Skilled Health Care Team
Our highly qualified staff is comprised of certified diabetes educators who have earned recognition as leaders in diabetes education. Our registered nurses and dietitians are trained in diabetes specialties, such as low vision service, carbohydrate counting and insulin pump therapy. They work together with your physician to provide you with the comprehensive support and training you need.
Comprehensive Program
Whether you have diabetes, pre-diabetes, or gestational diabetes, our Diabetes Self-Management Training will provide you with the following:
- Disease Overview - Types of diabetes and standards of care
- Nutrition Counseling - Individualized meal planning; weight loss strategies; carbohydrate counting guidance
- Physical Activity - Guidance for safe and effective exercise
- Home Blood Glucose Monitoring - Importance and frequency of testing
- Medication - Oral and insulin therapies
- Insulin Pumps - Start-up and problem solving
- Acute Complications - Hyperglycemia/hypoglycemia: prevention, symptoms and treatment
- Chronic Complications - Prevention and treatment
- Sick Day Management - Special diet and monitoring considerations
- Hygiene - Skin, dental and foot care
- Low Vision Service - Resources and tools
- Classes - Refresher classes available
- Good Health - General nutrition and disease prevention
Easy & Convenient
The Diabetes Program is located at Medical Plaza, just adjacent to and south of St. Anthony’s Medical Center (see map). Classes also are available at the Arnold Urgent Care.
The program features:
- Free, convenient parking
- Early and late appointments to fit your schedule
- Group classes or individual sessions
- Two to four visits are usually suggested
- No fasting required prior to appointments
Appointments & Information
Call 314-525-4506 for information or to arrange an appointment. Most insurance companies, including Medicare, cover much of the cost of Diabetes Self-Management Training and Medical Nutrition Therapy. Please call the member services number listed on your insurance card to verify coverage. When you visit us, please bring the following:
- List of current medications
- Glucose meter and records, if available
- Any lab work or information from your physician
- Food diary
Diabetes Support Group
The St. Anthony’s Diabetes Education Program sponsors a free support group that meets the 3rd Thursday of the month, alternating day and evenings. For more information or to register, call 314-525-4508.

It’s essential for people with diabetes to take care of themselves, so be sure to follow these steps:
Follow your healthy eating plan.
Check your blood glucose as directed.
Be active! Exercise regularly.
Control your blood pressure and cholesterol.
Examine your feet every day.
Take your medications as prescribed.
Brush and floss your teeth.
Have a yearly eye exam.
Don’t smoke.
Get an annual flu shot.
Get a pneumonia vaccine as needed.
