Primary Stroke Center
Know the Signs
Knowing the warning signs of a stroke – and acting quickly – can greatly affect your chances of survival and your level of recovery. At St. Anthony’s Medical Center, we don’t want you to be among the thousands each year who suffer the deadly or debilitating effects of a stroke because they didn’t seek immediate treatment at the closest hospital when symptoms started.

Accreditation
St. Anthony’s
is one of only a few hospitals in the St. Louis metro area
with a nationally accredited
Primary Stroke Center. To be certified as a Primary
Stroke Center, a hospital must clearly show that it has the
expertise and technological
resources to quickly diagnose
and treat any type of stroke within one hour of arrival.
Speed is critical. For the best outcomes, most stroke patients
must be treated within three hours after a stroke has occurred.
Stroke Team
Our stroke team of medical and nursing experts stands ready with advanced imaging technology and treatment options to give you or someone you love the best chance for survival and recovery. The team includes:
- board-certified neurologists on call 24/7
- specially trained nurses on call 24/7
- neurosurgeons
- neurologists
- interventional radiologists
- physiatrists
Treatments
St. Anthony's treats more patients for stroke, quickly and effectively, than other area hospitals. Last year, St. Anthony’s treated more than 750 stroke and TIA (transient ischemic attack or “mini” stroke) patients. St. Anthony’s also provides inpatient care to nearly 40 percent of neuroscience patients in the St. Louis area, with stroke being among the most prevalent diagnosis.
Upon diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke, interventions offered include:
- Intravenous thrombolysis (clot-busters delivered through the veins)
- Intra-arterial interventions (clot-busters delivered directly into the occluded artery via a micro-catheter)
- Angioplasty and/or stenting of partially obstructed pre-cerebral arteries
- Mechanical thrombectomy (removal of obstruction in cerebral artery using a clot-snaring device)
- A full range of neurodiagnostic and rehabilitation services
