Treatment Options

At St. Anthony’s Cancer Care Center, patients have access to the best technology in the world to fight cancer. Varian Medical Systems’ new Trilogy Stereotactic System is the most powerful and precise cancer treatment available, ushering in a new generation of cancer care. It is customized to meet the needs of each patient and delivers all types of external-beam radiotherapy, including:

Physicians perform ablation treatment to kill cancer cells.

A thermal ablation procedure kills cancer tumors with high heat.
  • 3-D conformal radiotherapy
  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • Stereotactic radiosurgical procedures
  • Fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy
  • Intensity modulated radiosurgery (IMRS)
  • Image guided radiation therapy (IGRT)

Interventional Radiology

Another key tool in our cancer treatment arsenal is interventional radiology. With the goal of zeroing in and killing cancer cells at their source, interventional radiologists use minimally invasive techniques, combining diagnostic imaging with skillful maneuvering of catheters inside a patient’s body to direct cancer treatments directly to a tumor. The catheters deliver targeted chemotherapy drugs, high-intensity heat or ice-cold temperatures to destroy cancer cells.

Examples of these procedures include radiofrequency or thermal ablation and cryoablation. Thermal ablation uses energy waves to generate heat and is effective in treating tumors in the lungs, liver, bone, breast and kidneys. Cryoablation involves applying a catheter probe cooled to below-zero temperatures to a tumor and is an effective option for prostate and kidney tumors.

In addition, chemoembolization and radioembolization interventional radiology techniques push chemotherapy drugs or radiation directly into arteries to cut off the blood supply to a tumor, effectively killing it.

Other advanced cancer treatments available include:

  • Prostate seed implant
  • Mammosite® radiation therapy
  • Outpatient infusion services, including chemotherapy, blood transfusions, antibiotic, injectable medications and more.

St. Anthony’s is a designated community site for the National Cancer Institute’s clinical trials made available through our affiliation with the Washington University School of Medicine. That means patients will have the benefit of participating in the latest treatment protocols available.
