Approximately 80 percent of Dr. Fonseca’s patients are seen by the multidisciplinary cancer service at St. Anthony’s. He is chairman of the center’s Cancer Committee and Thoracic Oncology Program. He also chairs the Institutional Review Board that considers proposed clinical trials.
“We are well-established and have good working relationships among all the physicians. The nursing floors have well-trained staffs, and we have a good support staff,” he said. “The radiology and radiation oncology department have definite advantages.
“The Thoracic Oncology Program is a multidisciplinary group of physicians interested in thoracic cancer. We have a conference four times a month to discuss patients and treatment options and plans. It gives our patients, although they may only see one physician, the benefit of opinions from multiple specialists regarding the best care for their situation.”
Dr. Fonseca is board-certified in thoracic surgery.
“I find this more interesting. Except for lung transplantation, we do everything here. We do esophageal resections, lung resections, biopsies and diagnoses. We do a fair amount of VATS surgery, or video-assisted thoracic surgery. That includes lung biopsies and minor procedures, and lobectomies as well. Surgically, we have everything available to us that we need.”
Patients are comforted by the continuity in staffing that characterizes St. Anthony’s, Dr. Fonseca said.
“If they come for a CT scan now, three months from now or a year from now, they are probably going to see the same people and the same physicians. If they should happen to come back to the hospital, they usually will see the same nurses. That is very reassuring.”
Cancer patients are a source of inspiration, Dr. Fonseca said. “They are very grateful and a source of encouragement, not only to us but to other patients. They are very strong and quite brave.”
