Cancer Care Services
Chronic, Not Life-Threatening

Leslie Ruzicka doesn’t let cancer slow her down.
St. Louis County librarian Leslie Ruzicka doesn’t let life pass her by. Diagnosed in 2002 with advanced breast cancer that spread to her liver, Ruzicka often rides the bike trails in south St. Louis County.
“After I was diagnosed, I had a lumpectomy and chemotherapy,” she says. “Now I take two drugs to keep my cancer in check.”
Advances in cancer care offer long-term hope
Ruzicka is one of hundreds of women being treated for chronic cancer. “It’s like diabetes,” she says. “Diabetics need insulin to stay alive. I need cancer medications to stay alive.”
“A cancer diagnosis is not the end of the world anymore,” she says. “A positive attitude works wonders, especially with so many treatment options.”
