Each year about 800 bicyclists are killed and more than 500,000 are treated for injuries in hospital emergency departments. Nearly two-thirds of the deaths and one-third of the injuries involve the head and face. For children under the age of 10, nearly half of the injuries involve the head and face. Helmets may reduce the risk of head injury to bicyclists by as much as 85 percent, yet only about half of bicyclists wear helmets.
Trained staff members from St. Anthony’s Medical Center’s Emergency Department offer free bicycle helmet fittings, for both adults and children:
First
Tuesday of Every Month |
Participants receive a free bag of goodies, along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration pamphlet, “Your Bicycle Helmet, A Correct Fit,” which gives step-by-step instructions to proper helmet fitting.
For those needing a helmet, one may be purchased at the time of the fitting for $10. Only cash payment may be accepted. These helmets meet the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards and come in a wide variety of colors and sizes for both children and adults.
For more information about free helmet fittings, call 314-525-4002 or 800-554-9550.
