The Cancer Care Center

Interventional radiology

A key tool in St. Anthony's Cancer Care Center's cancer-fighting arsenal is interventional radiology. Specially trained doctors, called interventional radiologists, use minimally invasive techniques to zero in and kill cancer cells at their source.

Using diagnostic imaging to guide them, the doctors skillfully maneuver a catheter inside your body to deliver the cancer treatment directly to a tumor. The catheters can also deliver chemotherapy drugs, high-intensity heat or ice-cold temperatures to destroy the cancer cells.

Some of these cutting-edge procedures are:

  • Thermal ablation, which uses energy waves to generate heat. This is effective in treating tumors in the lungs, liver, bone, breast and kidneys.
  • Cryoablation, a catheter probe that was cooled to below-zero temperatures is applied to a tumor. This is often an effective option for prostate and kidneys tumors.
  • Radioembolization, an interventional radiology technique that pushes radiation directly into the arteries to cut off the blood supply to the tumor. Without a blood supply, the tumor is destroyed.

Other treatments include:

  • Prostate seed implant
  • Mammosite® radiation therapy

St. Anthony's Cancer Care Center is a “big” hospital in terms of our medicine, but when it comes to the personal side, we are proud of our personalization. We pride ourselves on knowing each patient personally; our staff knows each patient by name, and we strive to create a family atmosphere.
