The Cancer Care Center

Radiation oncology

At St. Anthony’s Cancer Care Center, radiation oncologists work with the entire health care team to coordinate the best possible care for you, which may include extracranial radiosurgery.

Extracranial radiosurgery

Extracranial Radiosurgery is a series of three to five treatments of intense, focused radiation.

Usually, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is confined to cancers of the head and neck, because they can be immobilized easily. Recently, SRS has been attempted in extra-cranial cases. It is more difficult to immobilize other parts of the body, since even breathing can move a tumor in your body more than one centimeter. Patients receiving this kind of therapy require a body frame, which can cause discomfort.
