While many cancer patients are able to cope with the stresses of their illness and treatment, some experience pain, anxiety, depression, nausea or chronic fatigue that truly limit their quality of life.
At St. Anthony’s Cancer Care Center, board-certified internal medicine specialists with advanced certification in palliative medicine are available for ongoing consultation or to assist during the patient’s entire course of treatment.
The palliative medicine service focuses on relief of physical, emotional and spiritual distress and is one of the few programs in the region that is physician-directed. The palliative medicine team, which includes two physicians and uses St. Anthony Medical Center’s care managers (social workers) and chaplains, helps to coordinate care between the primary physician and specialists, such as oncologists and surgeons. Our primary goal is to relieve pain and suffering while facilitating continuity of care and decision-making.
