Lung Cancer Surgery

Surgery is an option for you if the tumor has not spread beyond your lung. Your surgeon will also need to take into account your general health. Patients who have severe heart or lung disease in addition to the cancer are often not candidates for surgery because of the stress surgery puts on their bodies.

Surgical Procedures for Lung Cancer

Your surgeon will decide on the best surgical approach depending on the size and location of the tumor. Surgical procedures performed at St. Anthony’s include:

• Wedge resection: The surgeon removes the tumor along with a small part of the lung.
• Lobectomy: Your surgeon removes one lobe of the lung.
• Pneumonectomy: Your surgeon removes the entire lung.
• Lympadenectomy: Sometimes, if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the same region as the lungs, your surgeon will need to remove the lymph nodes as well.

No matter which approach is used, your surgeon will guide you through the entire process. You can feel comfortable asking any questions you may have about the surgery or the recovery.
