Parenting can be a challenge and being successful as a parent can require help and guidance from others. Now, that help is available for free to residents of St. Louis County.

“Parenting Your Teenager: Concepts from ‘Parenting with Love and Logic’ and ‘How to Talk so Kids Will Listen’” provides the support parents may need. The class includes lessons taken from two popular and successful programs.

"Parenting with Love and Logic” focuses on a way to work with children that puts parents back in control, teaches children to be responsible, and prepares teenagers to handle the choices and consequences of the real world. “How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk” focuses on down-to-earth methods to give parents the skills they need to create relationships with their children that are less stressful and more rewarding.

“Parenting Your Teenager” combines these models to teach parents how to:

  • Avoid unwinnable power struggles and arguments
  • Engage a child’s willing cooperation
  • Stay calm and empathetic when their kids do incredibly upsetting things
  • Set enforceable limits
  • Deal with a child’s negative feelings: frustration, disappointment, and anger
  • Avoid enabling and begin empowering
  • Help a child learn from mistakes rather than repeating them
  • Raise children who are family team members rather than demanding dictators

The class meets for group sessions once a week for six weeks with new courses starting every six weeks. A list of courses, days and times is available here.

“Parenting Your Teenager” costs $120 for the six-week course, but it is available free to residents of St. Louis County with the support of the Children’s Service Fund. Scholarships are available for other participants.
