"We are so grateful that the doctors and staff have listened to our needs that we make St. Anthony’s Cardinal Glennon ER our first choice." — Ben Ott

Exceptional Care for Kids

St. Anthony's Cardinal Glennon Pediatric ER – more physicians, premier care

St. Anthony’s ER is prepared with special equipment and medications to treat Gabe each time he arrives at the ER.

Since it opened in 2007, the Cardinal Glennon Pediatric Emergency Department at St. Anthony’s has treated an average of 15,000 children each year. “We definitely fill a community need,” says James Cahalin, MD, medical director of the pediatric emergency department. “The response has been amazing and the kid-friendly atmosphere and resources make parents and kids more comfortable.”

Due to increasing demand, St. Anthony’s is adding more physicians to its pediatric staff, bringing the number to a total of seven full-time board-certified pediatricians, two part-time pediatricians and 19 RNs with specialized pediatric training.

One Family’s Story

Two-year-old Gabriel Ott, from Arnold, Mo., is a frequent patient. Diagnosed in infancy with a rare and severe epileptic seizure condition called Dravet’s Syndrome, Gabe has been rushed to St. Anthony’s more than 15 times to receive emergency care for uncontrolled seizures.

“It’s so rare that only about 500 people worldwide have this disorder,” says Gabriel’s father, Ben. “After we first came to St. Anthony’s, we talked with Dr. Cahalin and his staff about the need to have Gabe’s medicines ready and waiting. They listened to us and really cared about getting Gabe’s seizures under control.”

“We've always had the specialized equipment and medications needed to take care of Gabe,” says Dr. Cahalin. “We talked with the family and then with all of our pediatric nurses, the emergency room technicians, pharmacists and even the respiratory therapists so that we could enhance the speed at which we treated Gabe, since time was critical. We’re the closest hospital for this family, so we are committed to helping them keep Gabe well.”

“This place has great doctors and nurses,” says Ben. “When we have tough situations, it goes so smoothly at St. Anthony’s. We are so grateful that the doctors and staff have listened to our needs that we make St. Anthony’s Cardinal Glennon ER our first choice.”
