Reaching Out
Physician Ambassadors of St. Anthony's Charitable Foundation support community organizations.
At Epiphany United Church of Christ in south St. Louis, Lee Ortmeyer, MD, checks in on a community parish nurse program run by Joint Neighborhood Ministries. The program is one of several that received financial support last year from the St. Anthony's Charitable Foundation Physician Ambassadors. The group of dedicated physicians raises funds for health outreach projects within St. Anthony's service area as well as for St. Anthony's hospice program. “It's our way to give back to the community and encourage healthier lifestyles by supporting programs that focus on health education and advocacy,” says Dr. Ortmeyer, a Physician Ambassador.
Parish nurse Colleen M. Richmond, RN, BSN, MPH, says support like this is crucial to providing community health education and disease prevention programs. “I handle up to 70 patient visits a month with people who struggle to pay for basic health services,” she says. “Right now we're focused on prevention and education programs targeting chronic diseases that are affected by obesity, such as hypertension and diabetes. The support and recognition from St. Anthony's to help us offer these services is wonderful.”
