David Morton, MD

David Morton, MD, and the heart specialist team will deliver a full spectrum of heart care.

New Heart Specialty Group Formed

Leading cardiac specialists join St. Anthony's to enhance quality of care.

With a goal to develop the most comprehensive heart care program in the region and one of the best in the country, St. Anthony’s Medical Center has created a premier network of heart specialists that will work directly with the hospital to enhance the quality of care and scope of heart services offered.

Eleven cardiac physicians as well as their nurses, technicians and staff are partnering with St. Anthony’s to create Heart Specialty Associates. The hospital/physician partnership includes general cardiologists, noninvasive and invasive cardiologists, interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists.

“We are creating a fully integrated spectrum of top quality heart services,” says David Morton, MD, the new Clinical Director for the hospital-owned practice. “There will be no divisions between inpatient and outpatient care, or between medicine and surgical specialists. We will focus on the full continuum of heart care from prevention through rehabilitation. In addition, we will create more opportunities for patients to participate in leading heart research and clinical trials.”

The physicians will be charged with monitoring quality and patient outcomes within the hospital as well as in outpatient heart programs. Initially the practice will be based at St. Anthony’s with an outpatient office also located in Kirkwood. More outpatient locations are planned, including in southern
Illinois.

“Patients benefit because this results in better, more coordinated care,” says Dr. Morton. “And as we review outcomes and improve the way in which we treat patients, we also can reduce the risk of complications and hospital readmissions, which then have the potential to reduce hospital lengths of stay and overall costs.”
