St. Anthony’s sponsors “WomenHeart” support group

Did you know: More women than men die of heart disease each year?

On the first Tuesday of every month, several women gather at St. Anthony’s to share stories and information about living with heart disease. The support group, called WomenHeart, is part of a national network that aims to educate, support and advocate for all women living with or at risk for developing heart disease.

“We had our first meeting in April and interest continues to grow,” says group facilitator Kathy Stewart. “I think this provides the missing piece—the opportunity to learn and share with each other following a diagnosis and initial treatment for heart disease.”

St. Anthony’s WomenHeart Group is one of only two such groups in the St. Louis area.

“Having heart disease can be life-changing,” says Kathy Williams, who started the region’s first WomenHeart group. “We can show emotions, enter a welcoming atmosphere and ask questions. It’s wonderful to know women with heart disease are not alone.”

“Cardiac rehabilitation programs strive to optimize a patient’s physical, psychological and social functioning in addition to stabilizing, slowing or even reversing the progression of underlying heart disease,” says Nancy Houlihan, RN, a rehabilitation specialist in St. Anthony’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program. “By offering WomenHeart as a complement to our services, women have an ongoing place to come for information and encouragement.”

St. Anthony’s WomenHeart Support Group meets at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month in Cardiac Rehabilitation, Suite 105 of the Physicians Office Center, 10012 Kennerly Road. For more information, call 314-525-4091.
