Sandy Oliver is busy. Juggling work and family, she also has to monitor ongoing medical care for her mother, who had a heart attack in February.
“She was in the hospital for 36 days and then went to rehab and finally a long-term care facility,” says Oliver. “Now she has at least one to three doctor visits a month and, at first, we had to drive her to each appointment or arrange for a non-emergency ambulance service to take her. It was so frustrating.”
Then Oliver was told about St. Anthony's Senior Services, a one-stop program for seniors that arranges physician specialist appointments, medical tests, and even transportation to and from St. Anthony's. Just one phone call to St. Anthony's connects caregivers and geriatric professionals directly with a senior services coordinator.
“We take the hassle out of arranging doctor visits and medical tests,” says Eleanor Sicola, RN, BSN, St. Anthony's Director of Senior Services. “We are here to coordinate care so that patients not only get to see the specialist they need, but also obtain treatment and medical tests when appropriate.”
The coordinated service is for seniors in skilled nursing, assisted living or designated independent living facilities, as well as older adults living in their own homes or apartments. Senior Services staff handle all of the paperwork and ensure that patients are escorted to each medical appointment.
“It's simply fantastic,” says Oliver. “They make it so easy. My sister or I can meet my mother in the clinic and see how she's doing and ask any questions. The staff also arranges any follow-up visits. They simply are wonderful and caring.”
