Many people are confused about the types of primary care physicians (PCPs). The truth is that there are several types of physicians who can serve as your partner in health. Some may be MDs (doctor of medicine) or DOs (doctor of osteopathic medicine), but medical and wellness issues can be handled by all, including:

Family practitioners care for adults and children, so one physician cares for the entire family. Internal medicine specialists (internists) provide comprehensive care to adults.
Pediatricians care for infants and children.
Obstetricians/gynecologists focus specifically on women’s health concerns and surgical issues.

Other PCPs can specialize in other medical fields, such as geriatrics. The key is everyone should have a PCP to ensure regular screenings and exams are scheduled, in addition to office visits for illness or injury.
