Open MRI produces high-definition scans

Patients should feel confident that we have the expertise and advanced technology along with a compassionate staff to offer all of the services they expect.

Consumers are bombarded daily with stories and advertisements about the latest in imaging technologies as well as the cost and quality of such procedures. It can be tough to sort out the facts. Jeff Stevens, BHS, RT (R) (MR), certified radiologic technologist and St. Anthony’s Manager of Outpatient Imaging Services, answers these key questions:

I want an open MRI but have heard that they are less accurate than a traditional closed MRI in providing the highest quality images. Is that true? It is true that the first generation of open MRI machines did have noticeable differences in quality when compared to the closed systems. Images were not as clear because of reduced magnet strengths. However, the latest open MRIs available offer high-resolution images and can effectively be used for 90 percent of all imaging requests. St. Anthony’s open MRIs produce very clear images and physicians are pleased with the results.

How soon can I get my results? St. Anthony’s is committed to providing your physician with results as soon as possible. Our reports are almost always available to physicians within four hours—even faster in emergencies. As important, however, your physician may want to review the results along with any other laboratory tests, scans or physical exams ordered to determine your diagnosis, options and next steps, so it is best to discuss that with your physician.

Is it true that an open MRI will cost more at a hospital-based imaging center than at an independent facility? No. Contrary to some ads, St. Anthony’s Imaging Centers are very cost competitive. Imaging charges vary depending upon your insurance plan, co-pay, deductibles and the type of procedure ordered by your physician. If you are concerned about costs, call your insurance company to identify where you are “in network” to schedule any imaging tests needed.

You can also call St. Anthony’s Customer Service weekdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at 314-525-4747 or toll free 800-843-6312, and tell us your insurance plan. We’ll provide you with an estimated cost for your procedure up front, with no hassles.
