Three generations of women

The Sandwich Generation

Becoming parent to your parent

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans aged 65 or older will double by the year 2030, to more than 70 million.

For many, taking care of elderly parents can fast become a double burden when coupled with raising kids. A recent AARP poll finds that 44 percent of Americans ages 45-55 years have at least one living parent and one child under the age of 21—some 22 million report caring for both at the same time. Stuck in between, they make up the “sandwich generation.”

Of course, there are benefits to raising children while caring for your parents, but with that privilege comes added financial, physical and emotional burdens. These demands can have negative consequences on your health. Knowing how to prepare your home for the role reversal, safeguard your parents’ health, protect their finances and keep them socially active can help with their adjustment—and keep you healthy, too.
