St. Anthony's physician joins team to provide urgent care to Haiti quake survivors

More than 200,000 people died last January in the earthquake that shook Haiti. That number might have been even higher without the aid of medical relief teams and volunteers who poured into the area following the disaster.

Melissa Stein, DO, of St. Anthony’s Urgent Care Center in St. Louis, was part of the effort. As a member of the Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), Missouri One, overseen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Stein and her teammates operated in a red-zone area providing emergency treatment to citizens as an estimated 50 percent of the country’s own physicians and nursing staff were killed in the earthquake.

The two-week triage unit operated with no electricity and limited running water—enveloped in total devastation: starvation, dehydration, crime and disease abound. By far, the largest number of patients were children, Dr. Stein says.

“I saw diseases I hadn’t seen since medical school,” she adds. “It was such a poor country even before [the earthquake] that they’re really going to have a hard time coming back from this anytime soon.”

Despite the chaos, Dr. Stein says the team was able to come together under the pressure, one patient at a time—at an average of 150 patients per day.
