A simple PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam (DRE) are a man’s first defense in catching prostate cancer. While recent research continues a long-standing debate about the overall benefit of regular PSA tests, the American Cancer Society and the American Urological Society continue to recommend that all men be screened annually beginning at age 50 (or earlier if there are known risk factors). Men over age 75 may choose to be screened less frequently.

Many patients are giving high marks to the hospital’s Home Transport service, which debuted last fall. The service is available for just $15 round-trip to those over the age of 60 or disabled adults with a scheduled appointment for a hospital service at St. Anthony’s. Riders must live within a 12-mile radius of the medical center, extending up to 20 miles into Jefferson County.
“I felt so much gratitude for what they did for my brother, Don, and the staff was so wonderful,” says 90-year old Gerald Dreifke. Finding a home-like medical facility that could care for his termina
lly ill brother during the last months of his life was a blessing.
At St. Anthony’s Fern and Russell F. de Greff Hospice House, Dreifke’s brother was able to receive around-the-clock medical care, peace and compassion. “We could see the highest possible standards of service and character and care here,” Driefke says. “It impacted us greatly.”
