Especially for Women

Women's inpatient staff understands women's health concerns

"They were very aware of my needs and they were always here within minutes after I called them. We think it's special here," says Linda Polansky.

On the 8th floor of St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Barnhart resident Linda Polansky is waiting to be discharged after undergoing a hysterectomy.

Polansky, a patient in the Women’s Medical/Surgical unit, says she and her husband really noticed a difference in how staff treated patients. “They were very aware of my needs and they were always here within minutes after I called them,” says Polansky. “We think it’s special here.”

St. Anthony’s Women’s Medical/Surgical unit is unique. Staffed only by female nurses who have completed specialized training in both the care and emotional needs of women, the 14-bed unit boasts all private rooms and a soothing atmosphere. Female patients undergoing hysterectomies, mastectomies or cancer treatments, and those experiencing miscarriages or stillbirths, all receive care in the unit, as do other female patients hospitalized for medical care.

“It’s designed to give women the privacy and emotional support they need,” says Marsha Van Nest, nursing director. “We understand the unique needs of women experiencing these often life-changing events and we have staff who are experienced in women’s health issues.”

Polansky’s husband, Mike, agrees. “The nurses were all very concerned about how she was feeling and if she was comfortable,” he says. “It’s been a very good experience, because I think the nurses really understood what my wife was going through.”
