Expertise, Fast Answers

Fast-track service alleviates anxiety about test results

Radiologist Paul Oberle, MD, reviews a patient’s diagnostic mammogram within minutes after it is taken. Diagnostic mammogram results can be given the same day due to the hospital’s fast-track policy.

St. Anthony’s Breast Center is the only hospital in the region with a defined fast-track policy for handling diagnostic mammograms. The policy eliminates the stress women experience while trying to schedule follow-up tests, which commonly takes a week or more elsewhere.

“We’ve designed the program completely around patient convenience,” says radiologist Paul Oberle, MD. “Our job is to obtain accurate images and biopsies as fast as we can—with imaging results that day and biopsy pathology reports within 48 hours or less—so that we can alleviate a woman’s anxiety or tell her to seek treatment as soon as possible. The good news is that only a small percentage of women with abnormal mammograms actually have cancer.”

Last year, mandated state audits of mammography services at St. Anthony’s found the Breast Center staff had zero false negatives and was higher than the national average in detecting breast cancer. “That means that we found cancers in the patients who had the disease and didn’t miss any,” says Dr. Oberle. “Our job is to look for breast cancer in every patient, every day. We have the expertise to do that, and the staff and facilities to support additional testing.”
