Preparing for your Joint Replacement

Patients planning to undergo total knee or total hip replacement are strongly encouraged to attend one of St. Anthony’s free Total Joint Replacement Education classes.

These classes cover what you can expect before your operation all the way through discharge. It’s also the perfect opportunity to ask questions and find out ways you can optimize your road to recovery.

An orthopedic nurse educator leads each class. She will go over every step of the surgical process and what to expect for in-hospital care. She’ll also offer recommendations on what you should bring to the hospital.

A physical therapist will give an overview of inpatient and home exercises and discuss equipment needs post-surgery that may be a part of your recovery plan.

An occupational therapist will focus on lifestyle adaptations and tasks to help you avoid pain and maintain precautions during your recovery.

A care manager also will be on hand to answer questions related to discharge planning and post-hospital resources that may be needed.
