Preparing to Go Home (After-delivery care services)
St. Anthony’s has several services available for you and your newborn as your prepare to return home.
- Newborn Screenings
Before your baby leaves the hospital, laboratory screenings are done to check for genetic and metabolic conditions so that early detection and intervention promotes healthy outcomes. These include hearing and vision screenings as well as critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) and a blood test to check for various medical issues. The blood test is done with a small heel stick. Babies are given a drop of sucrose to ease any discomfort. You can breastfeed your baby while the blood sample is obtained. We will alert you and your pediatrician if there are any abnormal test results.
- Education and Support Services
We want you to feel ready and confident to care for your newborn when you return home. Our nurses will discuss how to care for your baby and answer questions you may have about recovering from your delivery and what to expect in the first few days at home with your infant. They also will encourage you to see your pediatrician within a week or so after delivery for a well-baby infant exam.
- Free Breastfeeding Consultations
Are you interested in breastfeeding your infant? St. Anthony’s Medical Center is a strong advocate for the benefits of breastfeeding for both moms and babies. Our lactation consultants are certified by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants (ICLC). They are available before, during and after your hospital stay to talk with you about breastfeeding and to answer any questions you may have. Even after you have returned home, you can call our lactation consultants any time or schedule a free onsite consultation here at the Medical Center to address any lingering concerns. Just call 314.525.1467.
